On the threshold of the 21st century an old dream of mankind
became reality: Multimedia. But what exactly is ... Multimedia?
Already in the fifties and sixties "Multimedia"-slideshows with
fade-over technologies and accompanying music were popular. The literal meaning comes from the latin multus = "many,
multiple, ..." and medium = "a channel or system of communication, information,
or entertainment".
Multimedia includes ...Audio (speech, sounds, music, ...),
Video (text, graphics, pictures, animations, movies, ...)
and
Interactivity (via keyboard, mouse, ...). Multimedia on the Internet ...The most exciting approach at the moment – and we expect this
to continue in the future - is multimedia via Internet, i.e. the presentation of
text, graphics, audio and video in an interactive Hypermedia-application within
a WWW-browser.
The World Wide Web (WWW) is probably the most successful
network information system in history. One of the advantages is certainly the
ease of use of its interface.
Since the introduction of the WWW, clickable navigation
introduced the concept of hypertext and hypermedia to many computer users all
over the world. Although these concepts seems to be new and unique to WWW, we
must not ignore that systems such as Memex, Augment, Xanadu, Zog, Owl and many
other pre-WWW hypertext systems contributed much to the research in hypermedia
and multimedia systems. |
